You might have heard, Amazon recently pulled a decent amount on the hoverboards for sale on its site. No need to be upset, it’s not as if they did it simply because the executives there didn’t have anything better to do with their time.
No, the move comes as a reaction to concerns that the batteries that come with some of these self-balancing scooters might not be up to applicable safety standards, including UN 38.3 (battery), UL 1642 (battery), and UL 60950-1 (charger).
That’s because there have been reports of 10 hoverboard batteries catching fire or exploding within the past year. Sure, that might not seem like much given the fact there are hundreds of thousands of them being used around the world right now, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is currently investigating to ensure these are just isolated incidents and not a case of batteries and chargers not being up to current safety standards.

Does that mean you can no longer get a hoverboard for you or your loved ones this Christmas? Absolutely not. A few vendors have already proven that their devices are up to all U.S. standards, so their hoverboards are back up for sale on Amazon.
